Get up at 6 am chop fire wood. Bath breakfast 8 am, sweep rooms and drains. Pick rice for eating and rolling, coffee (we were burning the rice and pouring boiling water on it for ‘coffee’). Saw wood. Wash clothes. Fetch rations and prepare veg for lunch. Lunch 12.30 pm, wash up and rest and if cooking loaf watch fire. Bath. Tea. Vegs to prepare for supper, walk or play bridge. Supper at 6pm, prayers at 8pm. Porridge and bed (Bath = water thrown over oneself eastern fashion. Bed for us was the concrete floor of the garage with a thin rush mat under us and sharing a blanket.¹³
